Orbital was pleased to attend the recent visit of HRH the Prince of Wales to the Rainbarrow farm (biomethane to grid project).

The Orbital representatives – Neil Stuchbury and Russell Brown joined a number of other personnel who had a key role in the completion of this important project.

The poundbury project is the first, fully operational, commercial application of Biomethane to grid technology and includes a number of innovative solutions which will both enhance performance and improve the fiscal viability of this important renewable energy source.

Orbital has provided the equipment via SGN (Scotia Gas Networks) to ensure the gas supplied is compliant and validated for entry to the grid, odourise the gas to ensure safety, measure the volume of gas supplied and allow reporting of all key criteria to the SGN control room.

This project is also the first commercial application (within this sector) for the GAS-PT2 gas properties analyser which measures CV, Wobbe, CO2 and other key parameters of natural gas. This instrument allows near real time analysis and, unlike traditional gas chromatographs, ensures that out of spec gas is diverted within seconds of detection.

Orbital is proud to be involved in this significant project, which will be the standard for gas to grid projects and contributes to the UK and EU 2020 strategy, and we wish to thank our suppliers, clients and ,especially, our dedicated & hardworking project management and implementation team.

Orbital is pleased to announce the launch of its IRIS-RTU brand

IRIS is a range of Remote Telemetry Units designed from the “ground up” to offer improvements in efficiency, reduce operating costs, enhance stability, augment security and most importantly, ameliorate the interface between sites, control room and operatives at all levels and locations.

The software architecture of IRIS is flexible and open source meaning it can be deployed for a wide range of applications with NO add on costs, NO software licencing issues and NO special hardware or software demands. It is fully accessible and configurable from within most internet browsers by simply connecting to the site where app style menus allow swift data access, retrieval, analysis and easy fault reporting.

We can supply IRIS in a support package suitable for your specification, the site, any environment or location. For example: we can provide a bespoke kiosk for installtion in hazardous areas, remote sites and coastal installations.

Orbital has significantly, invested in an extensive simulation system at our centrally located facility where we can exactly replicate all signals on your site allowing us to manufacture your IRIS-RTU, pre-configure the unit and undertake a full FAT (including end to end test with your control room/scada system) before the unit even arrives at site.

Examples of where to use IRIS

Water/Waste Water/Waste: Improve distribution systems or collection system operation, optimize treatment plants, water treatment (chemical and energy savings) and landfill sites

Electric Power Distribution: Controlling load break switchgear, reclosers and other IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices) at sub-stations pad or pole top locations.

Oil & Gas Pipelines: Monitoring and controlling flow, pressure, cathodic protection monitoring, gas properties (Biogas/Biomethane) perform emergency shutdowns, monitor remote exploration and storage sites.

Communication Network Monitoring and Control: Performing remote monitoring of critical equipment such as power systems, environmental control systems, tower lights, etc.

The ongoing annual assessments of our Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality Management System conducted by 3rd Party assessment Company Achilles under the Utilities Vendor Database ‘Verify’ assessment scheme occurred in April. This year’s audit covered a working site at National Grid Mickle Trafford on the EGMP Project with; Steve Jones, Orbital’s Site Team Leader and Chris Wain, Orbital’s QHSE Manager. The audit resulted in another improvement of scores.

(Sector average)

H&S 95.3%. up 1% (86.1%)

Environment 97.9%. up 5.5% (78.6%)

QA 96.4% up 1.9% (88.0%)

It is again good to report the assessment was successful and we continue to perform above the sector average. Orbital continues to be committed to maintaining ongoing 3rd Party approval of our Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental Management systems by Achilles, BSI, and NQA.

The beginning of this year sees the launch of our new corporate image. As our business has developed over the past few years, we saw the need to update our logo and branding in general.

We have been working on our corporate image for the past few months, and now feel our new logo has a look which best represents our changing company. The look of the company is already noticeably different, as is the livery on the majority of our vehicle fleet. You will probably have already received documentation and other general correspondence headed by our new logo.

Following from previous conferences which we held at Lords Cricket ground and, two years ago at Wembley Stadium, Orbital held this year’s ‘Innovations in Natural Gas’ conference at the Mercedes World Conference Centre. As in previous years, the conference was held jointly with SICK and was extremely well attended with in excess of 80 delegates and attendees.

Notably this year there were a number of new innovations including the launch of Orbital’s new Remote Telemetry System (RTU) and the launch of Orbital’s new Natural Gas Fast Sampling system. The main conference was centered around Mercedes’ state of the art lecture theatre and products we then showcased in breakout groups allowing delegates to gain a hands-on experience.

As well as being Mercedes’ showcase exhibition centre and museum, exhibiting Mercedes cars throughout the decades, the facility is also Mercedes’ test track for the UK. CUI Global kindly sponsored delegates to be driven around the test track by professional drivers.
