Case Study

Odourlsation of the entire UK Natural Gas network
Following previously undertaken work the infrastructure was in place to allow Transco to trade gas at a national level with Europe, however, there was one remaining problem which needed a solution.
This was the anomaly of odourisation, in that, the UK was the only country in Europe that odorlsed the entire network, hence, at the Interconnector transfer point a substantial odourlsation, de-odourisation, de-sulphurisation plant would need to be constructed.
This would have been both extremely expensive to build\operate and have major environmental Impact at a time when this has become intolerable.

 

 

The management of Orbital identified this problem very promptly and after substantial market research identified an alternative scheme and along with technology partners (YZ Industries, USA).
This became known as the Local Gas Treatment project (with a contract value in excess of £20 million) and required 129 local odourisation stations to be installed across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom with commissioning and handover carried out on one day !
Orbital completed this project on time, within budget and now maintains this critically important safety system on a 24\ 7 national basis.
