Meet the Team | Emma
April 28, 20241. Tell us a bit about yourself and your role
I had not long turned 20 when I started at Orbital. I don’t think I realised how much I’ve learnt until I’ve stopped to look back. I had no idea about the gas industry, I was completely naïve to it, and if I’m honest I didn’t think I would enjoy being here as much as I have done.
I started my career in the Service team. My first role was as a Service Administrator which changed to Service Coordinator, I mainly looked after our biomethane and LGT customers at that time. I enjoyed getting to know the customers and my team and building a relationship with them, you get to know each other and you build that bond where you’ll go above and beyond to try and help out wherever you could.
After a year or so my role changed to Service and Commissioning Coordinator, when the Commissioning team moved from the Engineering Department. I got to see another side to the business when I began getting involved with their work as up until then, my focus was on servicing & maintaining the systems, and resolving faults, where the focus of commissioning is on getting that system up and running to begin with so it was nice to get an insight into that side of things.
In December 2022, I left to take up a procurement role elsewhere, it was OK and I did enjoy learning something new, but when an opportunity to come back to Orbital arose, I jumped at it, I think I knew here was the place for me! I am now Service Operations Officer – which is mostly an internal-facing role whilst supporting the coordinators with our external customs where needed as well. I have been assisting Russell Brown and Paul Worthington with the implementation of our new nZero portal which has been exciting. Alongside this I have reunited with the commissioning team and coordinate all aspects of their work, support with process developments & improvements, equipment asset managing, assisting with the facilitation of training for coordinators & engineers, monthly monitoring for some of our GEU’s, really just trying to make the operational side of the department work more efficiently and in turn make it better for ourselves and our customers.
2. What do you enjoy about the job and why do you think it’s so important?
I’m lucky really because I pretty much enjoy everything I do within my role now, which is great for me. I love seeing things that I have implemented, hoping to improve what we do, work well. An important part of my job is finding new, modern and more efficient ways of doing things so sometimes it’s about creating new procedures and other times it’s just about streamlining what’s already in place, don’t change what’s not broken as they say. I think it’s good to be questioned on why we do things a certain way and whether there’s a better way to do them. With the new nZero portal, which we’re rolling out at the moment (February 2024) we’re bringing ways of working together into one centralised space, which I have no doubt will benefit ourselves and help us to deliver a better service to customers. We’re rolling it out at the moment.
3. Why are Orbital’s values important to you?
I think just being able to work in our own departments, but also pull together with each other when needed can be so powerful. There’s always someone to help you, or if they don’t know they’ll help you find someone that will. I think that’s such a big thing for me, especially in Service and Commissioning, we always help each other out, whether it be at 6am in the morning or at 11pm at night, I knew I could call any one of the engineers and they’d answer the phone, and I think they knew they’d get that reciprocated. It was a big thing I missed when I went away. The people here really are the core of the company.
4. What would you like to see happen in the future for you?
It’s so difficult to answer that because I enjoy the work I do now, I find it so fulfilling, I’d just like to continue growing our amazing team. It’s an exciting time in the gas world, the country is working towards net zero and we’re a part of making that happen with projects like H100, and what the future holds in general. It’s really exciting and I’m proud to be a part of it!
